Jealousy no good o!
Being jealous
is akin to being displeased with what God has given and not given to certain
people.
The other five wives were jealous of the new wife because Onaja, their
husband, was intimate with his youngest wife -
Though in Islam, a man of more than one wife is instructed to do justly among his
wives - They came to their husband's room altogether with knives and
sticks threatening to kill him if he refuse their demand. Their demand
was that he must have sex with all of them. He resisted at first but later gave in
to his wives desires.
Onaja stopped breathing when the
fifth woman was moving towards the bed. “suddenly, my husband stopped breathing
and they all ran out, still laughing", the youngest wife reported.
But when they saw that I could not
resuscitate him, they all ran into the forest. Two women have been arrested in
relation to the incident.
Jealousy is among the most
destructive emotions or feelings which one may have towards his fellow human being.
It causes him to wish evil for others and to be happy when misfortune befalls
them (as seen in the story)
Hence the prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against
envy by comparing it to fire that completely burns the wood. He said:
Beware of jealous, for verily it
destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood |Abu daawood
It is such a dangerous characteristics
that Allah revealed verses of the Quran to be recited as a protection from
jealous.
Be contented
Ibn Qayyim wrote:
"It (contentment) opens the door
of peace and security for the slave. It makes his heart pure from hatred, evil
and malice. The more contented the person is, the purer his heart is. However,
this does not mean that the slave should not make efforts to improve his
situation. A slave should work to gain success and progress but he should not
envy those whom Allah has granted more wealth or possession but he should be content with the decisions of Allah."
"Our Lord! Forgive us, and our brethren who came before us into the Faith, and
leave not, in our hearts, rancour (or sense of injury) against those who have
believed. Our Lord! Thou art indeed Full of Kindness, Most Merciful." Q59 : 10
