Christmas is one of the two
most popular Christian celebrations in the world. It is supposed to be the
birthday of Jesus and is celebrated by most Christians on the 25th
December. In
Eastern Europe, most churches celebrate it on 6th January while others
celebrate it in October. Some Christians
(e.g. Jehovah’s witnesses and seventh day Adventists) do not celebrate Christmas
at all.
A GLANCE AT ITS ORIGIN
A GLANCE AT ITS ORIGIN
It is apparent (almost
everybody knows) that Christmas does not derive its origin from Jehovah, Jesus,
the Bible or the first Christians.
According to Encarta Encyclopedia,
“the bible provides no guidelines that explain how Christmas should be observed, nor does it even suggest that it should be considered a religious holiday. Because of the lack of biblical instructions, Christmas rituals have been shaped by the religious and popular traditions of each culture that celebrates the holiday.
Even the word, Christmas does not come from the bible. Encyclopedia Britannica says the word “Christmas” comes from the Old Christes Maess or Christ’s Mass. Originally, Christmas was called Juleor Yule in England but it later became Christes Maess: a “mass” (Old English for feast day) held for Christ on his “birthday”, 25 December.
In fact, the origin of the word “Christmas” is quite recent. Encarta Encyclopedia says, “The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse, meaning ‘festival of Christ.’” ………..
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Together with you, my beloved reader, we are on the voyage of research.
